WHO GETS
THE CHILLI?

One jar. Many treats. One chilli at the bottom.
Don't get it in the end! 🌶️

HOW TO PLAY

🍬🍬🍬 👉🖐️
Take 1 to X candies from the jar each turn. X changes every round.
⚡➡️🫙
Zappy ALWAYS goes first. He's very proud of this.
🫙…🌶️😱
The last item in the jar is the chilli. Whoever takes it LOSES.

Hint: Zappy counts in groups. So should you.

🤓 WELCOME TO THE GEEK'S CORNER!

Have you ever wondered why the computer seems to read your mind? It is not magic, it is math! Let's pull back the curtain on how this game works.

🧮 HOW ZAPPY NEVER MISCOUNTS

This game is a famous mathematical strategy game called Nim. The computer plays perfectly by using a single line of arithmetic called a reduction algorithm:

take = N mod (M + 1)
  • N is the number of candies left.
  • M is the max draw size for the round.
  • Why M+1? Because it is the magic number both players control together! Whatever you take, the AI takes the remainder to make exactly M+1 items disappear each round. If the computer hands you a multiple of that magic number, you are mathematically trapped!

🌶️ THE MISÈRE TWIST

In a normal game of Nim, the person who takes the very last object wins. But this game uses the Misère variation (which means "bad game" in French).

In Misère play, taking the last item means you lose! Because the chilli is poisoned, the real battle is actually over the candies. Whoever clears the last candy forces the other player to eat the chilli!

🌍 WHERE THIS SHOWS UP IN THE REAL WORLD

Nim is much more than a simple puzzle:

  • The First Video Games: Way back at the 1940 World's Fair, a massive machine called the Nimatron was built just to play Nim against humans! It was one of the earliest computers ever made.
  • Keeping Secrets: The same remainder math (called modulo) keeps your internet data safe. It acts as the engine room for modern RSA cryptography and security codes.
  • Daily Checkups: It is the exact same "clock arithmetic" we use to tell time, and the math used to verify credit card numbers!
